The Middle East Public Relations Association was formed in 2001 by a group of PR agencies that sought to raise awareness of the discipline to a broader audience and to set themselves apart from the market by their adherence to international standards and ethics.

MEPRA continues to uphold such standards for its registered agency members by requiring them to sign a code of practise on an annual basis.

Any agency that fails to sign the Code has their membership suspended.

The current agency members represent the best of those operating in the UAE and broader Gulf region - both small and large. Many have several offices and provide services across the PR spectrum.

For the purposes of defining a PR agency MEPRA has adopted the definition as developed by the Council of Public Relation Firms USA (see separate article for more detail). Essentially a registered agency has more than 51 per cent of its gross income from core public relations consulting and related public relations capabilities when they directly support the core capabilities. These include a wide range of both strategic and tactical services.
