Masdar was established in 2006 by the Abu Dhabi Government through Mubadala Investment Company to realize a strategic vision – a vision for a sustainable future anchored by future technologies and renewable energy. As the UAE’s first major investment in the then-nascent renewable energy sector, Masdar was rightly considered a global sustainability pioneer.

However, with the 2008 breaking of ground for Masdar City, Abu Dhabi’s flagship sustainable urban development, the
Masdar brand name has become increasingly synonymous with the City and sustainable real estate. Audiences outside
of the energy industry have become less familiar with Masdar’s global clean energy projects and initiatives. This has led to confusion domestically and internationally around what exactly Masdar does as a business.
