To counter the massive dissemination of misinformation surrounding the COVID-19 epidemic online, Twitter decided to take an active role in helping people find reliable information,
connect with others, and follow what’s happening in real time. This as notably done through a range of global feature and product updates, available in the MENA region, to help people find reliable information, protect online conversations and encourage public engagement on all subjects surrounding the crises. This new directive was accompanied by an integrated announcement campaign leveraging several of the communications tools at the team’s disposal. We also formed open channels of communication across tier 1 publications in the region, ensuring awareness of upcoming updates and features in advance. This initiative resulted in widespread coverage across UAE, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, with
100% penetration of Twitter’s proactive efforts and prioritization of the health of public conversation.
